Math Counting Activity

It’s carnival week at school and we needed a counting activity that could go along with our theme. This simple art/math activity is great for little learners. gumballWhat to prep: I cut out 7 inch white circles for our “glass bowl” part. Then I used a small circle cutter punch (1 inch) to make the colored gumballs. I then cut red trapezoids for the base and a small red rectangle for the top. We glued on the name strips to the top. I also printed out a small label that says “I can count ________ gumballs” This label allows that student to insert the number of gumballs they have on their sheet. IMG_0104First, each student had to glue on different colored gumballs to their white circle. Then, they wrote their names at the top with a pencil.IMG_0103 For independent play, I called each student over for their one-on-one time to count their gumballs and trace their number. Remember to show students how to count using one-to-one correspondence, an early math skills that will ensure accuracy when counting. IMG_0027We had to hang ours in the hallway cause they were so colorful and cute!

Add ‘Em up Activities

math manipulatives Today in our weekly math segment, we will be talking about the importance of math manipulatives and counting materials. In early childhood education, it is very pertinent that every classroom has multiple types of counting materials available to students.

Some of my favorite manipulatives are offered by Scholastic! If you make online orders through Scholastic these babies are only about $7-$9 per set (which includes everything you need). Scholastic offers math Add ‘Em Up packages that are wonderful for independent math play.

Scholastic offers these kits at an affordable cost and the counters come in multiple colors, usually 5 or 6 of each color. The counting cards include a patterning side and an addition side. I currently own 10 of these kits and I rotate them out. . .one for each month of the school year! Some of the Scholastic counters include: apples, bears, cats, cupcakes, dogs (pictured below), hippos (pictured above), and pumpkins.

You can use math manipulatives in every area of your classroom. In art, you can count pom-poms, jumbo buttons, and jumbo beads. In math, you can use magnetic counters on boards, unifix cubes on a ten frames sheet, or even pegs on a peg board. In science, you can even count plastic bugs! Be sure to include math manipulatives that are different sizes, shapes, and colors to reinforce color recognition, shapes, and distinction between small, medium, and large.

One helpful tip when setting up your math manipulative shelf is to LABEL, LABEL, LABEL! Make sure each set of counters has its own bin (these are from the Dollar Tree and are by far one of my favorite bins for small counters) with a clear label for children to see. It’s easier clean up time, if you label the bin and put the same label on the shelf where the manipulative will go. Remember, every item needs a home so avoid mixing counters and small math toys.

Math counters are wonderful tools to enhance the understanding of patterning, color sorting, size sorting, and shapes.

Early Learning Math Concept Packs

As summer starts with backyard barbeques, ice cream cones, and long days spent at the beach. . .summer camp is in full swing! I think the hardest thing about summer for teachers is the dreaded thought of coming back in August and having a class full of students who completely forget everything they learned the previous year over the long two month break of summer. Half of our year is spent reviewing past concepts and reminding students to build on what they already know. So, in order to keep my kids brushed up on their math skills, we have created a few basic early learning math concepts packets to use for early childhood.

These packets introduce basic math skills such as number recognition, number formation, measurement knowledge, and counting skills.

Each packet includes: 1 Themed Graph (class participation), number clothespin cards covering numbers 1-12, counting mats covering numbers 1-10, pom-pom counting mats covering numbers 1-10, number tracing 1-20, addition and subtraction mats, and a measurements mat with recording sheet.
