Dr. Seuss Activities for the Primary Classroom

Picture1This week, we are celebrating the birthday of children’s book author, Dr. Seuss. Our classroom is filled with tons of smiles and silly laughs as we learn more about a very whimsical author and illustrator.

Today’s theme was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish! Our class also had dress up days this week to enhance our understanding of Dr. Seuss’ style (but honestly it was just FUN!) Mix and Match Monday was off to a great start with some pretty silly outfits.

First, we used blue Dot Markers to color fish bowls on white construction paper. Some of the children covered the entire bowl and others did a few dots, but let them be creative and do it any way they choose.

Next, while the blue fish bowls were drying the kids got to color their fish. I gave each child a yellow, red, green, and blue crayon. Although, most the kids followed the book cover of what colors the fish were. . .there were a few who just simply colored all the fish the same color (that’s fine, some children just tend to have difficulty with multiple step direction so I encourage them to do it themselves and keep going even if they get frustrated).

Once, the fish bowls were dry and the fish were colored and cut out, we counted them out and wrote our math sentence to see how many fish we had in all. This activity was really wonderful for all the students in my class. It included a multiple step process which was challenging for my younger kids, but really great for the advanced kids who are working well independently. We are focusing on fine motor (cutting and gluing) as well as color recognition, mathematics and writing formation. . .which this activity covered in all areas.
