DIY: Matching Alphabet Board

alphabet matching board0226151539

Making your own alphabet board is a great way to build up your literacy center. I like to include both bought games and Do It Yourself games. They are easy to rotate out of the centers and easy to store because they can be folded up. DIY games also teach your students that they must play with the game correctly as to not break the pieces, it really helps teach responsibility for our belongings.

Supplies you will need:

  • Small Foam Letters (preferably all the same color, but you can use whatever you have) One of each letter of the alphabet
  • Tacky Glue
  • Lamination Sheets/Laminator
  • Small Tri-fold Board
  • Alphabet Cards
  • Black Permanent Marker
  • Ruler or Yard Stick
  • Velcro Dots

The first step is to graph out 26 boxes across the board with a ruler. I traced it out in pencil to make sure every box was evenly spaced. Then, glue on the foam letters with tacky glue in each box.

Go over the pencil and be sure to use black permanent marker so the boxes will really stand out. Then place Velcro dots in each box. Find a cool alphabet sheet, I LOVE Kinder-Craze’s free alphabet sheet. I printed it in black and white, cut them out and laminated them. Make sure to add Velcro to the back of each alphabet card.

After everything dries, place all the items in your center and demonstrate how to match the alphabet cards to each letter. Enjoy!
