Buggy Food Fun for Spring

diyworm

Our class is in full bloom and ready for all of the fun spring activities for the next several months. As I was preparing for Easter and lots of pastel colors, I wanted to incorporate a fun food activity to make with the kids. I decided on Dirt and Worms! I found a few ideas on Pinterest that looked adorable, but I wanted an activity would could make in 15 minutes AND be able to take home without a HUGE mess!

What you will need: (this recipe makes 12 half pint jars!)

  • 1 set of Half-Pint Canning Jars with lids (1 dozen), I simply used the off brand at Wal-Mart because they were just for transport reasons, but you can easily use whatever size or brand you prefer!
  • 1 spool of twine, rope, or ribbon
  • 1 2-1/2 inch circle punch
  • 2 sheets of scrapbook paper, I used a spring theme
  • 1 large package of Oreo Cookies
  • 1 large bag of sour gummy worms
  • 12 Ziploc sandwich bags

Step One: Open all canning jars and rinse out with water. I also washed off the lids and rings just to be sure there was no extra residue from the packaging since we will be putting food items in them.

Step Two: I placed 5 Oreo cookies in each Ziploc bag and sealed them tight. I then gave each student a bag and they got to smash up the cookies to make “dirt.” Then, we scooped the cookies or “dirt” out the bag and into the dried jars.

Step Three: Each child then got to put their worms on top of the dirt. We filled each jar to the top and closed them tightly.

Finally, I punched out 12 - 2 1/2 inch circles to the lids. Then punched out twelve more circle for tags. Each child wrote “love, and their name.” We tied them off with burlap ribbon and sent them home!

So, what are some of your favorite spring sweets?
