Using YouTube in the primary classroom

Tech2

Integrating technology into the classroom can be both a nightmare and an amazing asset to your teaching. In today’s generation of youngsters, multi-media and technology advances are constantly changing and improving. However, that makes a teachers job harder when it comes to grabbing their attention and expanding on current trends.

I have found that you can implement technology into your classroom very easily through the computer, television or tablet. Obviously it takes a great deal of preparation and research of sites in order for teachers to know if they are appropriate for your students to use. YouTube is a wonderful video clip site that can introduce new topics and themes into the primary classroom. YouTube has even launched a new site exclusively for teachers and students.

Let’s learn about YouTube. . .

  • Each month, over 800 million users visit YouTube
  • Every minute there are 72 hours of video uploaded
  • 70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the United States
  • YouTube is localizes in 53 countries and across 61 languages
  • In 2011, YouTube had more than 1 trillion views

You can use YouTube in two specific ways: Make your own channel and post videos for your classroom OR watch already uploaded videos and share with your students.

YouTube gives you the option to add your own homemade videos about teaching strategies and activities to your own YouTube channel. For example, the Early Childhood Videos channel offers videos to help you expand your knowledge of learning and teaching with various training videos.

You can also use YouTube for large group discussions or as independent work area sessions. YouTube offers tons of sites for early childhood such as: interactive story time, songs and music, themed plays for children, virtual field trips, and educational themed videos to encourage that every lesson plan is learned thoroughly.
